Liberal Enrollment Surges
During '92 and '93 Campaigns

The number of registered Liberals grew to 72,440 as of November, 1993, a 16.8% increase. This follows an increase of 4,063 in 1992 (8.0%).

For three straight years the Liberal Party has seen the highest increases in enrollment of any of the political parties. These parallel the increases in the number of voters in New York State registering as 'independent,' suggesting a large movement of voters away from partisan labels and policies and towards a politics of merit and candidate performance.

Such a trend, combined with the high profile of the Liberal Party in the Giuliani mayoral campaign and the transition following, is expected to further spark enrollment in the party throughout 1994, our Fiftieth Anniversary.

Liberal Sweep (almost)
in Boroughwide Races

The Liberal Party fielded candidates in three of the five races for Borough President in Manhattan and the Bronx; our candidates were Ruth W. Messinger (D-L) and Fernando Ferrer (D-L), who were both re-elected. And in the race for Borough President of Staten Island, the Liberal candidate was none other than Carl F. Grillo (L), our Executive Director and Chairman of the Richmond County Liberal Party, who garnered 5,495 votes (5%) against incumbent Guy V. Molinari (R-C-RTL).

In the two races for District Attorney, the Liberal Party supported Robert M. Morgenthau in Manhattan, and Charles J. Hynes in Brooklyn. Both crimefighters were re-elected.

CANDIDATES IN LOCAL ELECTIONS

46 OF 49 Liberal Nominees
Win Seats on City Council

Overall, the Liberal Party candidates for City Council were very successful. Only three of our candidates lost: Anthony Avella (D-L), who waged an aggressive campaign to unseat incumbent conservative Michael Abel in District 19 in Queens; Migialla Rivera (L), who sought to replace Joan Griffin McCabe in Brooklyn's 38th District; and Robert Meyers (R-L), who opposed Anthony David Weiner's re-election.

Here are the members of the newly-elected City Council who proudly ran on the Liberal line:
